The Hobbit

Last night I went to see The Hobbit with Matt, John and Caitlin.  The movie was not something I was prepared for.  After spending the whole day doing work, watching a two and a half hour movie was hard.  The speed of the movie was too slow for my liking.  There was also a lot of unnecessary back story.  Flashbacks were used way to often and started to take over the movie.  During the first hour, the story was too slow and it picked up after that.  Even after the pace went faster, the movie was still too slow.
I never read the book, and I expected to not understand the movie.  To my surprise, I understood most of the movie.  The book was separated into three movies, and if the other two are anything like this one I probably will not go out and see them.  The book is less then 300 pages, not every little detail needs to be included.
The beginning scene with the Dragon was great.  Buildings fell down but the camera never actually showed the full dragon.  This created more fear then an actual dragon would because knowing what it looks like makes the image less scary.  Imaginations are more powerful then any visual effects are.
